IS THE PRESIDENT BRINGING US TOGETHER … AGAINST HIM?

When President Obama ran in 2008, he promised that he’d unite us…  respect freedom of conscience and religious liberty … bring Americans together. And it’s starting to look like he might just be doing that … by uniting us against him!

Oh, sure… I admit that he’s been outrageously divisive, especially when it comes to these issues. For example, he has ridiculed those in small Pennsylvania and mid-West towns who, he says, just “cling”– “bitterly” — to their religion. And he has blatantly tried, too, to interfere with the right of a Protestant congregation to select its own minister.  And he has ridiculed Catholic moral beliefs through propaganda launched by his own White House staff.  Ok, OK. So he violates the Constitution, conscience guarantees and fundamental religious liberty. Picky, picky, picky.

But, on the other hand,  just look at the amazing common fronts he’s caused to be launched in matters like these … against him:

  • When his EEOC appointees tried to interfere with Michigan’s Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church when it tried to exercise its First Amendment right to choose its own minister, their interference united Americans of almost every faith… against the Administration! As Baylor Professor Thomas S. Kidd noted in USA Today:

What do evangelical Christians, Mormons, Jews, Hindus, Muslims and Hare Krishnas have in common? Normally, you wouldn’t expect these groups to agree on much. In the Supreme Court case Hosanna-Tabor Church v. EEOC, however, an incredible array of faith groups — including representatives of these and other religions — have filed amicus briefs in favor of the church. Led by the non-sectarian Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, Hosanna-Tabor’s defenders know that a decision against the church could have terrible consequences for freedom of conscience in America.”

  • And in that very same Supreme Court case, the Administration’s anti-constitution and anti-faith agenda brought another — even more divided — group into unanimous unity…  in opposition, again, to the Administration’s agenda. I’m talking about the nine Supreme Court justices themselves! They set aside their persistent propensity to disagree strenuously in 5-4 decisions — at least for this one case — as the Justices slammed the Obama Administration’s twin assaults on the United States Constitution and fundamental religious liberty in a 9-0 decision!
  • When Obama’s White House representatives ridiculed fundamental Catholic moral belief while attempting to shore up the Obamacare mandate to require all healthcare insurance to pay for abortifacient and contraceptive pills and sterilization, he prompted even friendly, left-leaning bishops and some dissident Catholic periodicals to join faithful Catholics in opposing him. And that’s not all! Even many in his own pseudo-Catholic political coterie joined the protestors, and these included even his principal Catholic apologist (and recent Ambassador to Malta) Doug Kmiec, far left Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne and even his former Democrat colleague and healthcare co-conspirator Bart Stupak (pictured at left), who once had promised his pro-life constituents that Obamacare would not infringe upon their moral beliefs.
  • But there’s more! Scores of Democrats running for office in both Houses of Congress are now falling over each other as they try to distance themselves from the Administration on this issue. Gee — does that mean the President might even cause this dysfunctional Congress to get something done, at least when it comes to opposing his attacks on religious liberty?

Admittedly, much of this contemplated unity seems pretty far fetched…. But then again, just look at what is already happening– thanks to the President! Just imagine…. Maybe, some day soon, we can all join together around an ecumenical and bi-partisan campfire in united opposition as we join together in a chorus of Kumbaya….

THE OBAMA MANDATE, RELIGIOUS LIBERTY AND THE GATHERING FIRESTORM

Philadelphia’s Archbishop Charles J. Chaput seemed to speak for a diverse and rapidly growing chorus of religious and political voices this past week as he described, from a Catholic perspective,  the attack on religious liberty embodied in the Obama Administration’s health care mandate:

“This is not just another important issue among the many we need to be concerned about. This ruling is different. This ruling interferes with the basic right of Catholic citizens to organize and work for the common good as Catholics in the public square.”

The Administration responded with a blatant yet clumsy attempt to divide and conquer Catholics by manipulation of the issue …  all orchestrated by a President who promised to end divisiveness and become the President of all Americans. And it all played out on White House stationery. Cecilia Muñoz, Obama’s Director of the Domestic Policy Council,  launched a missive ridiculing Catholic belief in contraception, using Obama’s own words:

“Nearly 99 percent of all women have relied on contraception at some point in their lives –- 99 percent….”

In the course of doing so, Muñoz made sure to say that she is a “Christian” and, as if to justify her right to spew anti-Catholic bigotry, said she got her first job working “with Catholic parishes in poor neighborhoods, and my salary was funded by a grant from an arm of the Catholic Church.”

This was a  frontal attack on fundamental Catholic beliefs and the response was strong, clear and unequivocal.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia

Archbishop Chaput called the White House actions “insulting” and “belligerent, unnecessary and deeply offensive to the content of Catholic belief.” After pointing out that many Catholics had supported Obama’s election and, subsequent to the passage of Obamacare, had made repeated efforts to resolve differences with the President, Chaput then noted that these efforts were met with unmet promises. He concluded, pointedly:

“We cannot afford to be fooled – yet again – by evasive and misleading allusions to the administration’s alleged ‘flexibility’ on such issues. The HHS mandate needs to be rescinded.”

Altogether, about 200 Catholic bishops have written letters to be read at parish Masses, denouncing the attack on religious liberty in the Obama mandate. The protestors have even included the decidedly left-leaning Cardinal Emeritus Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Bishop Robert Nugent Lynch of Saint Petersburg and Bishop Matthew Clark of Rochester.  And strong denunciations of the mandate have even been made by

Prof. Douglas Kmiec of Pepperdine Law School, President Obama's recent Ambassador to Malta, friend and Catholic apologist

Obama’s 2008 Catholic apologist and recent Ambassador to Malta Douglas Kmiec and by columnists for liberal (some say, dissident) Catholic periodicals.

Nor has the Administration been able to confine the uproar within the boundaries of Catholicism. Protestant evangelical Pastor Rick Warren,

President Obama and his 2009 invocation pick, Pastor Rick Warren of California's Saddleback Church

who was chosen to give the prayer invocation at Obama’s 2009 inauguration, tweeted a series of alarms:

“I’d go to jail rather than cave in to a government mandate that violates what God commands us to do. Would you?”,  said the first. A second quoted from Acts 5:29 that when government tried to coerce them by saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name”,  the apostles replied “We must obey God rather than men!” And Pastor Warren’s third tweet was equally clear: “I’m not a Catholic but I stand in 100% solidarity with my brothers & sisters to practice their belief against govt pressure.”

Nor is the discontent limited to faith communities. Criticisms have been voiced by scores of Democrats in both the Senate and the House, probably fearing political repercussions in the upcoming elections.

Irony abounds here. Obama is doing more to unify Catholics than any Church undertaking possibly could. And he may be doing more to unite peoples of all religion on this issue than  a thousand ecumenical services could achieve.

NEWSFLASH! WHITE HOUSE SAYS CATHOLICS AND PLANNED PARENTHOOD NOW AGREE!

WOW! The White House wrote me the letter below to tell me that Catholics, Planned Parenthood and NARAL all agree now! Everybody thinks President Obama’s mandate on abortion, sterilization and artificial contraceptives is just great!!!! KUMBAYA!!! Look, it says so right here … on White House Stationery! Surely the White House wouldn’t lie to the American people…. would it? “Catholics United”… “Catholic Health Association” … Sure sounds like everybody agrees!

The White House
Protecting the Health of Women While Accommodating Religious LibertyBy Cecilia Muñoz, Assistant to the President and Director of the Domestic Policy Council

Thank you for using We the People to make your voice heard about the Obama Administration’s decision to ensure that women have access to free preventive care with no co-pays, including contraceptive services, no matter where they work….

As the President said:

Nearly 99 percent of all women have relied on contraception at some point in their lives –- 99 percent….

Now, as we move to implement this rule, however, we’ve been mindful that there’s another principle at stake here –- and that’s the principle of religious liberty, an inalienable right that is enshrined in our Constitution. As a citizen and as a Christian, I cherish this right. In fact, my first job in Chicago was working with Catholic parishes in poor neighborhoods, and my salary was funded by a grant from an arm of the Catholic Church. And I saw that local churches often did more good for a community than a government program ever could, so I know how important the work that faith-based organizations do and how much impact they can have in their communities….

There are tremendous health benefits for women that come from using contraception. Contraception is a safe and effective way ….

President Obama is also committed to preserving religious liberty and he listened to the concerns raised by certain religious organizations and took them seriously….

Here are a few statements from groups involved in the issue:

Catholics United: President Obama has shown us that he is willing to rise above the partisan fray to deliver an actual policy solution that both meets the health care needs of all employees and respects the religious liberty of Catholic institutions.

Catholic Health Association: We are pleased and grateful that the religious liberty and conscience protection needs of so many ministries that serve our country were appreciated enough that an early resolution of this issue was accomplished.

Planned Parenthood: The Obama administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all women will have access to birth control coverage, with no costly co-pays, no additional hurdles, and no matter where they work.

NARAL: Today’s announcement makes it clear that President Obama is firmly committed to protecting women’s heal

Oops… I just noticed: Cecilia Muñoz, forgets to mention that this is a frontal assault on the Catholic faith. “Catholics United” and “Catholic Health Association” have great names but, in fact, are ruses that usually attack the Church and faithful Catholics when they speak out to protect the sanctity of human life, marriage and family.

But would the White House really join forces with wolves who perpetrate fraud under the cover of the sheep’s clothing of Catholic-sounding names? Surely, the President, who was elected on the promise that he would represent all Americans, would never misuse the Office of the Presidency to attack Catholic beliefs by deceiving the American people, would he?

Sadly, this proves he would… and he has. The White House has declared on the Catholic Church and on religious liberty itself. And its principal weapons are subterfuge and deceit.

WHITE HOUSE AS SNAKE OIL SALESMAN

Here’s today’s latest “compromise” on “free” abortifacients, sterilization and birth control:
“Tell ya what I’m gonna do, Catholic institutions like hospitals, universities etc….
You just pay for the other health coverage that doesn’t include sterilization, abortion-causing drugs and artificial contraceptives. And your insurance company will provide all these extra things to your employees at absolutely no cost…. And, by the way, if you really believe that you’re not paying for that “free” coverage, let me also offer you, absolutely free, whenever you buy my….”

Poor Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg! In becoming a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, she swore to
“administer justice… and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America under the [United States] Constitution…. So help me God.” — Title 28, Chapter I, Part 453, United States Code
Yet such is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s embarassment with that outmoded document that we call the Constitution — [Yes, the one that she swore to uphold] —  that she had to appear this week on post-Mubarak Egypt’s national TV network to warn them:
I would not look to the US  constitution, if I were drafting a constitution in the year 2012. I  might look at the     constitution of South Africa. That was a deliberate attempt to have a fundamental instrument of government that embraced basic human rights, had an independent judiciary… It  really is, I think, a great piece of work that was done.”
Why is it that Justice Ginsburg doesn’t see her own Constitution. also, as a “fundamental instrument of government that embraced basic human rights and an independent judiciary”? After all, Americans have enjoyed such a long and unparalled history of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness under its protections! And, by contrast, the violent protests in South Africa since 2004 have caused that country’s foremost historian and political scientist, Abahlali BaseMjondolo, to call it the most politically unstable society in the world.
Oh — but, of course, the South Africa Constitution does contain one explicit constitutional right that cannot be found anywhere in the text of the United States Constitution. In Chapter Two, Section 12,1 and 2, it specifically recognizes a guaranteed human right to kill life in the womb at any stage and without any need for any justification.
Gee! Too bad nations can’t trade players like professional athletes. Justice Ginsburg might be so much happier in South Africa! And maybe we could find some appropriate place here for Professor BaseMjondolo to serve. I don’t know much else about him but at least, unlike Justice Ginsburg, he seems to have some basic rooting in reality.

Will Catholic Universities and Hospitals Close?

Yesterday, President Obama’s HHS Secretary Sebelius praised what she called an administration “compromise” on the planned requirement  that will force employers to provide birth control for employees with no co-pays and deductions as part of their healthcare insurance. According to Sebelius, the administration has balanced religious concerns against its healthcare edict by giving religious employers such as Catholic universities and hospitals an additional year, until August of 2013, But religious leaders still see this as a new chapter in the Administration’s war on religious liberty.

“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” said Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

Besides the fact that the requirement will force the religious-affiliated employers to provide birth control that violates their religious beliefs, religious leaders also point out that the requirement includes abortifacients that violate the Obama administration’s pledge that the government would not mandate abortion.

Nashville’s Dominican congregation said they will close their nursing center operation rather than violate the Catholic Church’s religious beliefs.

Imagine what the Administration will do in the next four years if President Obama is re-elected!

Don’t Be Glum, Jon — Newt’s Shown the Way!

Sure, John Corzine… you do seem like a real loser right now. As MF Global’s former CEO, misplacing 1.2 billion dollars  and causing all those farmers to lose their life savings was pretty tacky. Being New Jersey’s disgraced ex-Gov doesn’t help either.
But cheer up! The future looks bright ahead — you can always run for President of the USA!
No, I’m not delusional. If you think no political party would nominate its most unsavory member to run for President, look no further than what Newt’s doing now among Republicans! All it takes is partisan pandering, and you’ve been good at that, too! After all, this is the land of opportunity. You’ll just have to wait until 2016, after Barack ends his second term.
You’re rotten, it’s true, but partisans seem to love that kind of person to run for President! If even someone like Newt can have so much success among Republicans despite all the  baggage that he lugs around, surely you can get Democrats to nominate you, too!
Of course you’d lose the general election. Only Democrats would be so blind as to vote for somebody like you, just as only blinded Republicans will vote for Newt. But the fact that nominating Newt is sure to prove suicidal in a general election where most voters aren’t blind partisans hasn’t derailed his train that looks like it might be heading to the nomination. Pandering to blind partisans works!
And smart guys like you and Newt surely will find lots of ways to get even richer while leading your parties down in flames.
So, given your lack of decency, integrity, honor and scruples, there’s no reason not to go for it, Jon. With Newt as the pathfinder, unsavory character and horrendous baggage are finally enjoying their day in the sun.

Newt’s Demon

As this post’s title says, this is about Newt Gingrich’s demon — in the singular, not plural. While his failings, both public and private, are numerous and gravely troubling, one blog post cannot begin to offer the fair and thorough treatment that those many issues warrant. If Newt stays in contention, our future blogs during the next year will examine  his ethical lapses, influence peddling, hypocrisies, inconsistencies, duplicity, grandiosity, breaches of candor, marital infidelities, political treacheries, disloyalties, and other transgressions. But, in an important sense, these other calamitous failings all trace back to the same root character flaw: arrogance. And that arrogance is what seems likely to prevent Gingrich from getting elected. Even more predictably, it is what would cause the decline of America in a Gingrich presidency.

Just listen to what those who have observed him say:

  • Charles Krauthammer, Fox News commentator, makes clear that Gingrich’s prideful arrogance makes him an unreliable and, by unstated inferences,  even a corrupt ally: one who betrays Republicans and conservatives in order to team up with Nancy Pelosi on global warming…. who takes $30,000 a month from Freddie Mac, a “parasitic federal creation” even while he urged that “those in Congress who aided and abetted it should be imprisoned”…. Who took more than $1.5 million as an influence peddlar.  Krauthammer then goes on to voice warnings to Republicans and conservatives:  “Thinking of himself as a grand world-historical figure, attuned to the latest intellectual trend (preferably one with a tinge of futurism and science, like global warming), demonstrating his own incomparable depth and farsightedness. Made even more profound and fundamental — his favorite adjectives — if done in collaboration with a Nancy Pelosi, Patrick Kennedy or even Al Sharpton, offering yet more evidence of transcendent, trans-partisan uniqueness.” The warning to Republicans is clear: Gingrich’s arrogant pride makes him unreliable, unpredictable and potentially disloyal — not the candidate you want to lead your party as its presidential candidate.
  • George Will, conservative commentator, also sounds an alarm in speaking about Gingrich’s prideful arrogance: “This is the guy who sees himself as the combination of Churchill and DeGaulle and the embodiment of a nation in deep peril. The stage has to be lit by the fires of crisis and grandeur to suit Newt.” Will continues: “[Thinking that] he’s the smartest guy in the room”, Wills says he has been ensnared by grandiose big government plans and “intellectual fads” for decades. And Will further warns: “Expect these patterns to manifest themselves again. If Newt Gingrich has any pattern at all — and he does– it is a pattern of getting himself into trouble. The reason is he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room.” And his arrogance also leads him to think that the usual rules don’t apply to him. For that reason,  his track record “embodies almost everything disagreeable about modern Washington.”

Note that Krauthammer and Will are Republican conservatives … just imagine what independents will come to think of Gingrich as the 2012 election approaches.

RADICAL ISLAM’S WORST NIGHTMARES? MEET DR. JASSER, FOR ONE EXAMPLE

Why is this past President of the Arizona Medical Association — a Phoenix cardiologist — so concerned about radical Islamic extremism? Is it because Dr. Jasser served his country for 11 years in the US Navy where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander while earning the Navy’s Meritorious Service medal?  That’s only part of the explanation.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser is a devout Muslim who knows the subject of Islamic fundamentalism, terrorism and political repression all too well because his parents were among the victims. After escaping Syria’s repressive Islamic regime when Zuhdi was a child, the Jassers soon discovered for themselves America’s unparalleled freedom to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And they loved the America that they found.

So when the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) claims to speak for American Muslims when it says Muslims are victims of American hatred, bigotry and oppression, Jasser exposes their lie to the world. And he does so with the power and conviction that gets people to listen.

In both his parents’ home and the small Wisconsin mosque where his family worshipped,  Dr. Jasser learned to love America’s priceless freedoms and opportunities, even as a young child. And he couldn’t keep silent when supporters of the traitorous terrorist, US Army Major Nidal Hasan, tried to blame America for that traitorous  massacre at Fort Hood by saying that Hasan’s evil was just his driven response to a culture of anti-Muslim hate in the US Army. It was Dr. Jasser who was seen on TVs  throughout the world to give lie to that claim.

But that’s not all. Jasser also confronted Islamic fanaticism and lies by  founding the American Islamic Forum for Democracy  (http://www.aifdemocracy.org ). AIFD’s mission statement is persuading  Muslims and other loyal Americans “to advocate for the preservation of the founding principles of the United States Constitution, liberty and freedom.” It looks to American democracy as the world’s best hope against repressive Islamic regimes. In doing so, it insists that the “devout practice of Islam” — in its truest form — is wholly compatible with American democracy. It even argues that the Koran itself demands equal respect and equal justice for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It targets Muslim extremists, political opportunists and theocrats as the world’s greatest threat. It pledges that “as United States citizens we support our American armed forces, .. absolute and literal adherence to our citizenship pledge … and support for American interests, domestic and foreign.” It pledges to foster “a special relationship between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam” and the “economic principles of free markets and capitalism.” It condemns terrorists and all their justifications for violence, and “the targeting of civilians and non-combatants.” It also proclaims its “support for and unqualified recognition of the state of Israel” and calls for a Palestinian state that will be committed to peacefully “living side by side next to the established state of Israel.”

Jasser has been described as a conservative Republican. He makes frequent appearances on Fox News and the Glenn Beck channel but is also often featured on MSNBC’s Chris Matthews’ Hardball , CBS and CNN as well. He has expressed impatience with the Obama White House for doing too little to support Syrian moderates who oppose the Assad regime.

Jasser makes no effort to conceal his disgust for American Muslims who see themselves as an oppressed minority. He supported an Oklahoma referendum against sharia law, calling it an important response to “draconian sharia law systems around the world in places like Iran, Sudan, Saudi Arabia” that have perpetrated harms “against Muslims and non-Muslims around the world in the name of sharia law.”

Jasser also defended Catholic University when “a leftist attorney” filed a lawsuit against the University, contending that the civil rights of the University’s Muslim students are violated by the presence of crucifixes in rooms where they pray on campus. Instead, Jasser praises the University for giving Muslim students a private place to pray on campus and expresses thanks to Catholics for giving his family and other Muslims a room so they could pray on the premises of a Catholic Church in Wisconsin while they were building their own mosque elsewhere.

Dr. Jasser is not alone in organizing moderate Muslims to confront Muslim extremism. Throughout America and also other parts of the world, radical Islamic fanatics are being challenged by Muslims who love democracy and hate terrorism and who accuse terrorists and jihad fundamentalists of     willfully distorting what the Koran says by taking passages out of context and  by ignoring both historic context and also other passages that directly condemn their fanaticism.

Some of these other Muslim voices against extremism include:

  • KARAMAH (see karamah.org ) — an Islamic organization that promotes the rights of Muslim women under Islamic and civil law, opposing those who interpret the Koran in ways that intimidate and demean women. Karamah espouses “equity among all ‘children of Adam’, regardless of gender or other differences.  Through education, legal outreach, and advocacy, KARAMAH tries to contribute to the understanding and promotion of human rights worldwide while opposing extreme interpretations of the Koran.
  • Prof. Asma Afsaruddin — of the University of Indiana at Bloomington and Chair of Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy.  She is a feminist and a Muslim champion of gender equality.
  • Prof. Muqtedar Khan — a professor at the University of Delaware and a scholar of the Koran and Sufi Islamic mysticism.  A devout Muslim, he is a leading intellectual voice for democracy, equality and pluralism in the Islamic world.
  • The Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA) — a Muslim religious organization in the United States that uses traditional Islamic scholarship to rebut Wahhabi Islamic extremism in addressing contemporary issues. Using traditional Islamic spiritual and legal rulings, it confronts Islamic perpetrators of violence in Saudi Arabia, the Taliban, and many terrorist organizations.
  • Hamad Ahmad Chebli — is a Koran scholar, Imam and spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Central Jersey in New Brunswick who often works with Christians and Jews in confronting terrorism. In doing so he is representative of most — but, sadly, by no means all — imams throughout the United States.
  • Masjd al-Saffat mosque — one of many Muslim mosques in the United States that have confronted extremists in their own ranks. When Imam Sabur Abdul Hakim  tried to impose Wahhabi/ Salafi extremism at the mosque by naming his son-in-law as ameer with no democratic consultation, the congregants at the mosque resisted, even bringing suit against him in New Jersey Superior Court to prevent his extremist ideas and anti-democratic usurpation.
  • Manda Ervin — American Islamic Scholar and women’s rights leader who rebuts fanatics with anti-jihad (“ijtihad”) interpretation of the Koran.

Nor are Muslims in America alone in fighting Islamofascist extremism and fanaticism within their Muslim community. Other Muslims doing the same elsewhere include:

  • The Muslim Canadian Congress — Unlike some of the groups above, this is a secular organization made up largely of former Muslims, including Tarek Fattah, a staunch opponent of sharia law. Unlike Dr. Jasser and many other Muslim opponents of Islamic extremism who are staunch political conservatives, Fattah and the MCC hold leftist political views.
  • Iraq- Nibras Kazimi (fights jihadists in military)
  • Bengladesh — Shahriar Kabir
  • Jordan — Shakeral Nabusli
  • Iran (now in Netherlands)– Dr. Afshin Ellian
  • Palestinian — Nonie Darwish
  • Syria — Wafa Sultan
  • Turkish (in USA) — Zeino Baran

In short, Dr. Zuhdi Jasser does not stand alone in the Muslim world as an outspoken critic of Muslim extremism. Those non-Muslims who oppose Muslim extremism will do well to support Muslim moderates in battles against religious fanatics and political tyrants that are well under way.

Two Popes Shined Yesterday

Almost two million pilgrims rejoiced yesterday in the Eternal City as they celebrated the beatification of one of history’s most beloved Pontiffs, Blessed Pope John Paul the Great. Many remembered him as a world leader, often even crediting him as the leader who did most to defeat Communism. But all must have been touched by the much more personal perspective from the present Holy Father, whose poignant memories described not merely a great man but a saint.

His Holiness Benedict XVI remembered the Church’s newest blessed not only as his fellow successor of Peter but as his own former “boss”, his friend and his spiritual mentor:

“I thank God for Blessed Pope John Paul II. For twenty-three years, I was at his side and came to revere him. His prayer edified me: deeply united to God even amid the many demands of his ministry. And through his witness in suffering when the Lord gradually stripped him of everything, he remained ever a “rock”, as Christ desired. His profound humility, grounded in close union with Christ, enabled him to become all the more eloquent as his physical strength declined. In this way he lived out in an extraordinary way the vocation to become completely one with Jesus.”
